TL;DR
Key takeaways
- Yearlings progress at different speeds. Sean says the Anders colt is back in pre-training after four weeks at home, while the Tagaloa filly is not precocious at all
- Sore shins mean a spell. Sean says it is standard for young horses to fill their shins, so State Secret is home for eight weeks after a jump out with Gai and Adrian
- Trials and races shape the plan. Bombay Boom won a trial at Warwick Farm and is back in work with Matt Dale. Hidden Motive was fourth in the Breeders Plate and returns to Nathan Doyle after about three weeks at home
- Pre-training is part of the path. The Astern filly spent six weeks pre-training with Luke Morgan at Tamworth, then went to Warwick Farm, and is due to spend about six weeks at the farm
- Attitude counts. Sean calls Hidden Motive a puppy with a good attitude and says the Toronado filly is probably the kindest filly the team bought this year, attitude wise
- 17
- yearlings reviewed in this episode
- 8 weeks
- spell for State Secret after filling his shins
- 6 weeks
- pre-training for the Astern filly with Luke Morgan 40 kg

0:00 Yearling update ahead of Everest Day
Steve 0:00 Steve & Sean here for Episode 17 of Off N Racing. We're in Sydney right now, Everest Day tomorrow. We're looking forward to catching up with a number of our owners at an event at Randwick. And we thought we would take the opportunity to talk through 17 of our yearlings that we bought this year. Yep. An exciting time of year. One's already been to the track and just provide an update for the owners. The ownership group really. I'm going to roll through these in alphabetical order, Sean. But the Anders Happy Pilgrim Cult, I think that's in work right now with Nathan.
Sean 0:38 Yep. Really happy with the cult. He is, he's had, I think he'll be two weeks. He's just been back in for two weeks. He had a preparation with Nathan already. Nathan Doyle had a jump out, came home for four weeks, just a short break. He's a, he's a quite a good, naturally doing horse. Got a good constitution. Um, gave him four weeks off. He's now in pre-training. And by the time this comes out, I'd say the horse will be, uh, back with Nathan. Um, I can see him all being equal being, uh, pre-Christmas as well. Getting to the races. Sounds great. And, and we own the half brother as well, uh, private Harry who, um, who trailed super muscle brook. Yeah. Yeah. He's obviously, we've got an opinion of him. He hasn't been under race pressure yet. Again, by the time this comes out, he might be leading towards going to the races or very close to. So keep an eye out for him. He's shown us quite a bit, but we'll see under race pressure.
1:30 The Astern filly and Bombay Boom's trial win
Steve 1:30 Yeah. Uh, Stown Beauty, a stern filly. Um, I think, I think she's with, um, David Pfeiffer right now.
Sean 1:36 Yep. Yeah. She left this morning actually to come back to the farm. Um, she's ticked all the boxes. Uh, she was up with Luke Morgan for six weeks of pre-training at Tamworth. We sent her down to Warwick Farm for the first time, more of a three-year-old, uh, typical of the breed. She just needs time. Beautiful, lovely, big filly that we bred out of one of our own mares, one pound. Um, lovely horse. She's come a long way. She'll come home now for six weeks. We're going to give her a bit longer because she's, you know, a bit of a time filly. Uh, exciting. Yeah. Lovely, lovely filly moving forward.
Steve 2:10 Another exciting one. Uh, Bombay Boom won the trial at Warwick Farm. Um, and actually is franked on the breeding side, the same Grand Dam as broadsiding.
Sean 2:22 Yeah. Yeah. So the Grand Dam through broadside, it's, um, you know, it's good page there. We liked him in January. We liked him as a, as an athlete, uh, trialed well, albeit he didn't like the heavy ground there. Um, but, you know, spirited booms generally don't. But, um, Jace Collett just nursed him around, won the trial nice. Obviously we gave him sort of 11 days off in the paddock. He's now back in work with Matthew Dale and, uh, we'll probably look to go north with him.
Steve 2:49 Great. And, um, we've had great success with Matt Dale and, um, and the spirited boom before, uh, Malibu.
Sean 2:55 Yeah. Yeah. Just, um, look, um, good success with Matthew, Matthew Dale, full stop. But, um, obviously, you know, that spirited boom, um, we like them. I think we'll, we'll continue to buy them and, um, he's a very underrated stallion.
3:10 Castelvecchio filly jumps out, Cosmic Force colt arrives
Steve 3:10 Uh, the Castle Vecchio Racatino, um, I saw the update from David Fifey yesterday in the, in the barriers there at Warwick Farm.
Sean 3:17 Yep. She jumped out with astound beauty. Uh, we'll push on with her. She's quite naturally precocious. Um, whether or not she gets to the races, that'll be up to her. But I feel she'll probably trend towards a trial, uh, that might do her after that. But David will be the judge by that. There's no rush. Um, nice filly, probably still a prep away maybe from getting to the races, uh, but developing nicely.
Steve 3:45 Awesome. The, um, the Cosmic Force Miss Marilyn Colt. Uh, I've really enjoyed the, it's one of the last to be at the breakers, but really enjoyed the feedback from Gordon Pratt.
Sean 3:55 Yep. Lovely Colt this. Um, he's only recently just been completely syndicated. Uh, so well done to everyone that jumped, uh, on board with him. Lovely mover. Uh, one of the nicest Cosmic Forces that I've seen this year. A few people have said that. Hence his price tag for what the stallion stood for. But, uh, lovely, lovely horse. He will, uh, he's already with Nathan Doyle. I think he arrived there today or yesterday. And, uh, again, more of a three-year-old type. He'll probably get to the races as a late two-year-old, but he's got scope. So he'll just constantly improve. Um, whether or not he gets to a trial, not too concerned this prep. Um, most probably not. But, uh, we'll just look after him. He's a nice horse.
4:42 Hidden Motive after the Breeders Plate
Steve 4:42 Hidden motive, cleverly named by capitalist out of secret agenda. Um, came forth in the breeders plate at Randwick.
Sean 4:49 Yes. Uh, so unlucky. Like, to be fair, um, uh, a little bit more racing. Lucky probably nearly wins or probably does win. Um, but that aside, uh, very smart Colt. Uh, he's at home. He came home two days after that race. He'll be home for three weeks or so. And then he'll go straight back to Nathan Doyle. And, um, I know Nathan's got a few things mapped out for him, but, um, I'll leave that up to Nathan and the horse. And, um, but I'd highly suggest for, for people to follow him. Nice horse.
Steve 5:23 And he looked very happy in the farm yesterday. He's in with the star turn Colt.
Sean 5:27 Yep. Yeah. He's one thing about this hidden motive. It's just, um, just attitude. He's got such a good attitude on him. Um, he's just a puppy. You have to drag him everywhere. Um, and that's what I feel the, the good Colts are like.
5:42 The Microphone colt runs fourth in a trial
Steve 5:42 No woman, no cry, uh, Colt by microphone, trained by Gay and Adrian. It did make it to the, the first official two-year-old trials and now back at the farm.
Sean 5:52 Yep. Um, trial pretty much what we expected to see. He ran fourth. I feel he'll get a mile. Um, precocious. He's a precocious animal, but, uh, just not sharp. So he could be a JJ size type of two-year-old hopefully. Um, but lovely animal, beautiful attitude and big rangey scopey microphone of throwing those milers. Uh, I think you'll probably see him. He'll get to the races. He'll have probably four more weeks off. We're going to give him eight to 10 weeks and it's not that he needs it, but there's just no races around for him. It's quite, um, yeah, you're sprinting type of two-year-old races at the minute. So we'll time it correctly. Uh, he'll come back two trials. You'd imagine he'll go 1200 first up.
6:42 The Perast filly and Half Crown
Steve 6:42 Uh, the, the Perast out of Santorini Miss, uh, Santorini Miss, uh, I wasn't so familiar with Perast myself. So I looked him up. So one, a Caulfield Guineas prelude and, uh, fifth in the Caulfield Guineas, fifth in, um, fifth in the, uh, the Stradbroke and seventh in the Golden Rose. So running those, the big, um, three odd races, um, Santorini Miss has thrown another horse. We own half crown. Um, but, um, and, and we'll be trained by, uh, Stuart Kendrick.
Sean 7:15 Yeah. Like not a commercial stallion, but, um, the opportunity came up. Um, look, we bought half crown for $5,000. You know, he's, he's already won four races, multiple placings, and he's still got scope there. He's a six-year-old, but he's still probably got another three or four wins in him. He's a very honest horse. And, uh, the opportunity came up to, uh, do a deal with Glen Eagle Stud and the guys there. They're great to deal with. And, um, we sort of bought the horse in conjunction with each other. Uh, obviously I like, uh, what the, what the mum throws and, uh, I'm not too concerned about the pressed side of things. Um, she's a nice leggy filly. She's a three-year-old. She will not race as a two-year-old. Um, but we'll just keep her active. We'll keep her, uh, in and out of the system. She'll go back to Luke Morgan's first week in November. She'll be there for six weeks, come home for probably six weeks, uh, go back to Luke's or straight
8:11 The So You Think filly out of Bellevue Girl
Steve 8:11 up to Stu Kendrick. Uh, so you think out of Bellevue girl, I know that's a favorite from the Luke Morgan, uh, breakers and, um, David Pfeiffer has a great reputation with so you things.
Sean 8:21 Yeah. Like lovely filly. Um, probably one of the nicest yearlings we bought this year, a three-year-old. She won't be precocious. I think class will probably get her to the trials as a late two-year-old, but she's not. Um, we're going to give her a good eight weeks and I didn't think we'd get eight weeks out of her cause she's such a gross doing mare, but I've put her with her two other fillies to keep her active and she's not getting too heavy. She's, um, lovely filly to deal with too. Normally there's, so you things can be quite highly strung, especially the fillies, but, um, she's lovely to do everything with, um, really like her. Uh, spirit of boom out of lick of paint.
9:03 Spirit of Boom filly and the Star Turn colt
Steve 9:03 I had at least one prep with, with Matt, I think she's been back at the farm and headed back to
Sean 9:07 Matthew soon. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So, um, lick of paint, filly spirit of boom. She's had two jump outs. Um, she's a filly that'll probably get 1400. I feel in time. Sure. Race is a two-year-old, but again, not, not super precocious. Um, I feel she, she's got scope, this filly. I like her. She's a great mover. Um, very sassy, very, very sassy thing. Um, so look, with her and her size, et cetera, like she'll, it's good that she has that. Um, very nice athlete. Uh, keep an eye out for her. I like her. Um, and she's got a bit of attitude as well. The star turn cult, um, well
Steve 9:49 related out of a, uh, a fast, fast net rock mare. Yep. Um, look great at the farm yesterday and, um,
Sean 9:56 soon to head up to Stuart Kendrick. Yeah. Love this cult. Um, I just liked him from the get go, short couple, short cannons, sprinting tight. Uh, again, he'll, I can see him racing as a late two-year-old, but with scope, uh, he'll go on as a three and four-year-old. And again, he he's with hidden motive. Um, they're paddock together just because they've got such, um, a pretty cool lad demeanor about them. Um, yeah, he's super relaxed and, uh, really like his attitude, like the athletes. And he sort of trends like hidden motive, like I, again, why I put them together. Um, I think they're quite similar, albeit, um, I don't think he'll be pre-Christmas.
Steve 10:42 And beautiful chestnut as well, stamped really well by, um, by, by star witness.
Sean 10:46 I think we've still got some shares still left in here. Yeah. Whether this, um, they're available when this comes out or not, I'm not sure, but, um, hit Steve up because I really like this cult.
10:57 State Secret spells after sore shins
Steve 10:57 Uh, state secret, uh, state secret, um, really well named by Russian revolution out of street secret. Um, and, um, already had a good prep there with Gain Adrian.
Sean 11:10 Yep. Uh, had a jump out with Gain Adrian close to the trials, uh, went shin saw. He's home now for eight weeks. Uh, that's pretty standard for these babies to fill their shins. So when they get a bit of activity there, we tip them out for two months, uh, Russian revolutions, just in my experience, aren't, uh, pre-Christmas two year olds, but that's only my opinion. Um, we'll give him some time. We'll give him eight weeks, lovely horse. I just feel, I think he's going to be a better three year old.
11:43 The Tagaloa filly and Mitch Freedman
Steve 11:43 The Tagaloa filly. Um, it's our first time working with Mitch Friedman. I think great horseman, really great communicator. Um, and she's back at the farm at the moment.
Sean 11:51 Yeah, it's been seamless. That partnership, um, Mitch bought half of the horse. Uh, he liked her that much and I believe we may have just fully syndicated her at this stage, um, at this stage. So keep an eye out for that lovely filly. Um, she was the best moving athlete at the Adelaide sale. We had to go home with her. Um, not precocious at all. I don't even think she may get to the races as a late two year old, but I think you'll find, uh, she'll be better suited as a three year old
12:22 This Ain't Texas, the Time to Reign filly
Steve 12:22 plus. Uh, this ain't Texas. It's time to reign filly. It's our all female syndicate. And I think she keeps Shane on his toes at the farm.
Sean 12:31 Yeah, this, this filly, she, to say she has sass is an understatement. She's, um, she, you've got to really watch her. You've got to be careful. Um, uh, she's not one that you let the kids hang around. Yeah, that's for sure. But, uh, look, lovely filly. Um, and a lot of, I will say like, she's got a lot of *** in her that, um, that I like to see with a, quite a precocious gray filly like herself. Um, I think she's going to be very tough. Um, I think we're going to need to pull the trigger on her quite early. I don't think there's a lot of scope there. I hope I'm wrong, but I feel she'll, she'll be a real two and three year old. Uh, whether she goes on from that, hopefully we don't need to, uh, I feel we can probably get a good result with her. She's got good residual value. Um, she's out of a black type mare and, um, look, the, the great page. Um, and yeah, she will be all being equal pre Christmas. And obviously we'll be focusing on those English bonus races being the female loan, especially the English millennium, et cetera, with the bonuses, but, uh, lovely filly with
13:39 The Toronado filly and Wild Boom
Steve 13:39 a lot of attitude. The Toronado Swift Sis, uh, enjoys a paddock with some of the others,
Sean 13:45 uh, other yearlings with Matt Dale. Yep. She's in with the Lico Paint and the Bellevue Girl. Uh, probably the kindest, uh, filly we've bought attitude wise this year. She's a darling of a thing. Um, even when you feed her, she'll always come up to you first. Um, yeah, just, just an absolute sweetheart. Like for a horse to go without food because she wants a pat first, it's quite rare. Um, she, yeah, she's a darling really like she's done enormous since she's been home. She goes in, um, work on Monday. So this will already be, uh, she'll be in work by the time this comes out. She's done so well. She's probably put on 40 kilos in the last six weeks and, um, really happy with our lovely horse that will need time. Uh, we're not going to push her. She'll be a
Steve 14:33 lovely three-year-old. Uh, wild boom. So by spirit of boom, out of wild about her and going to Stuart
Sean 14:39 Kendrick. Yep. Yeah. He's spelling up there. Actually, we just gave him three or four weeks off. So it was pointless to truck him down for eight hours. Um, just needs to grow a little bit. This fellow he's, um, he's just lacked a little bit of growth, beautiful attitude on him. Uh, quite a cheeky little fellow, but, um, spirit of booms aren't the biggest horses, but I just like to see him grow half a hand more. Um, if he had the size about him, he will, he would have been a pre-Christmas horse. Uh, but given his size and how he needs to mature a little bit more, uh, I can't see him getting there. So, uh, nice horse. We just want him to grow a bit more.
15:16 The Zoustar colt out of Savvy Coop
Steve 15:16 And the Zoo Star Cult by Savvy Coop, um, fully syndicated quite some time ago,
Sean 15:21 but we still get calls every week. Yeah. Like as you, as you've said, you know, he's out of, you know, a dual group one winner, Savvy Coop and by probably arguably one of the best stallions in the country. So, uh, lovely horse, uh, not as a, he wasn't as fluent of a mover as the tag lower at the Adelaide sale, but he was just a brute, uh, very strong, good attitude, walked with purpose, um, short couple, just a sprinting move movie, you know, like that 11, 1200 type of horse had to go home with him. Um, same farm as Storm Boy and, um, lovely horse, good attitude too. I really like his attitude. Uh, he's gone shinsaw as well. He had a jump out with Matthew Dale, Matthew, um, he owns part of the horse as well, which is great. And, uh, he'll have, if we, if he allows us to weight wise, cause he's a really good doing horse, we'll give him
Steve 16:20 eight weeks. And could get over some ground Savvy Coop, um, one, um, Oaks as an example.
Sean 16:28 Yeah. I can't see it with him. Like I could be wrong. Um, there's no rules, but I just, I can't see it. Um, like we've got a Philly satin stiletto, you know, she's probably our smallest horse that we've got. She wouldn't, you know, she'd be just 15 hands, but it's sort of trending. She unfortunately didn't come up this prep. So he spelled her, but, um, uh, she, she might get 1400, um, which blows our mind because she looks like a 900, 800 meter horse. Um, there's no rules. I just don't expect the zoo star to get past 12 to 13, but I could be wrong. Um, like him, he's nice.
Steve 17:09 And that's a wrap for episode 17 of often racing. You can catch us on YouTube, uh, Spotify, um, everything. Tell you, tell your friends, share it, uh, put it in your pocket, do whatever,
Sean 17:21 but check out our website too. Um, you know, kbloodslot.com.au give Steve a call, uh, flick him an email, steve at kbloodslot.com.au any questions, hit him up. Uh, there's no such thing as stupid questions. So just give us a call and, uh, we'll get ready for episode eight. 13. Yep. That's right. Stay tuned.
