Horse-First Syndication

Life After Racing

A racing career is only part of a horse's life. Here is how we look after our thoroughbreds once the racing is done.

Our Commitment

A racing career is only part of a horse's life

Every horse that comes through Kurrinda Bloodstock Syndications arrives with a story still to be written. We buy them as yearlings, educate them and send them to trainers we trust. Our owners follow every trackwork gallop, every barrier trial and every race day. For a few years, that horse is the centre of a lot of people's lives.

Then the racing ends. For most thoroughbreds it ends somewhere between four and eight years of age. That leaves a fit, intelligent, athletic animal with potentially twenty or more years ahead of it. What happens in those years matters to us as much as anything that happens on the track.

We are a horse-first syndicator. That phrase is easy to put on a website, and it means nothing unless it holds when a horse stops earning prize money. A racehorse does not choose to be a racehorse. People breed it, buy it, train it and race it, and those people owe it a good life when the racing is done. At Kurrinda Bloodstock Syndications we take that responsibility as part of the deal of owning a racehorse, not as something extra we do when it suits us.

There is also a simpler reason. Our owners love these horses. Many of them are buying into racing for the first time, and they become genuinely attached to the horse they part-own. Nobody wants to cheer a horse home in the metropolitan, provincial or country areas and then wonder where it ended up. Knowing that their horse has a safe, happy future is part of what makes ownership with us rewarding, and it is a promise we take seriously.

Second Careers

Three horses, three very different careers

The best way to explain what life after racing means to us is through the horses themselves. Sovereign Dane, Sizzle Nickel and A Dime Approach had very different racing careers. What they share is that each of them retired to a future that was planned, not left to chance.

Sovereign Dane was an honest, workmanlike racehorse who gave his owners plenty to cheer about, and his big day came at Newcastle in January 2024, when he won a maiden handicap.

He was never going to be a Group 1 horse, and he did not need to be. What made him special to his owners was his temperament: a sensible, willing horse who tried every time he went out. Those are exactly the qualities that make a thoroughbred suited to a second career.

When it was time to retire him, the decision was made with his welfare first. He is now competing on a weekly basis in dressage and equestrian.

Sizzle Nickel’s story matters for a different reason. She showed real ability at the trials, winning at Tamworth and Muswellbrook. On race day it never quite came together. In 8 starts for trainer Cody Morgan she did not win or place, and her last start was at Narromine in October 2023.

In racing, that happens far more often than the headlines suggest. Most thoroughbreds never win a city race, and plenty never win at all. Those horses deserve exactly the same care at the end of their racing careers as the stars do. Arguably they need it more, because they have no racing record to sell them to their next home.

For Sizzle Nickel, the end of her racing career was the start of something better suited to her. She ended up winning at her first Equimillion attempt.

A Dime Approach was a genuine favourite with our owners, the kind of tough, sound stayer every syndicator hopes for. Across 27 starts he won 3 races, including a maiden at Ipswich over 2170m in November 2023 and back-to-back wins at Benalla over 2100m in January 2025 and Colac over 2008m in March 2025.

With 2 seconds and 3 thirds as well, he earned more than $74,000 and gave his owners years of enjoyment.

A horse who raced 27 times over ground has stamina, a sound constitution and the mental toughness to keep turning up. Those same qualities make a stayer like him a natural fit for disciplines such as eventing, where fitness and a level head count for a lot.

If anyone doubts what a retired racehorse can go on to achieve, they should spend a day at Equimillion. Run by Racing NSW, it is Australia's richest event exclusively for retired thoroughbreds, with more than $1 million in prize money. The 2026 edition runs from 2 to 5 October at the Sydney International Equestrian Centre at Horsley Park.

Equimillion covers four disciplines: dressage, show jumping, eventing and show horse, with classes for horses at every level of experience. That last point is important. It is not only for established competition horses. The Star classes are built for horses early in their second careers, which gives newly retrained thoroughbreds and their riders a genuine goal to work towards.

The event keeps growing. This year it attracted 640 entries, up 24% on 2025, and the Star classes alone drew 169 entries, up 26%. New this year are a Stockman's Challenge and a Thoroughbred Showcase.

The demand for retired Thoroughbred horses continues to grow and that is a testament to the athleticism and versatility of these wonderful animals.

Graeme Hinton, Acting Chief Executive, Racing NSW

Why does an event like this matter so much to a syndicator? Because it changes how people see an ex-racehorse. A thoroughbred coming off the track is sometimes seen as hot, unpredictable or hard to manage. Equimillion puts hundreds of them in front of the public doing calm, precise, beautifully trained work: a dressage test, a clear round, a cross-country course. Every one of those performances makes it easier for the next retired racehorse to find a good home.

It also gives riders a real reason to take on a thoroughbred. Prize money worth competing for, a national stage and a clear pathway from Star classes upwards all make retraining a racehorse an attractive project rather than a gamble. That is exactly the market our retired horses go into.

Equimillion sits alongside the wider work Racing NSW does for retired horses. Through Team Thoroughbred NSW, it runs six properties across the state where retired racehorses are retrained and rehomed. Kurrinda supports that system and works within it, because the more pathways that exist for a retired horse, the better every horse's chances are.

Our Sponsorship

Sponsoring a rider every year

Supporting life after racing cannot stop at good intentions, so every year Kurrinda Bloodstock sponsors a rider who competes on retired thoroughbreds. It is one of the most direct ways we can contribute.

Retraining a racehorse takes time, skill and money. A horse coming off the track has spent years learning to break from the gates, settle in a field and quicken when asked. Teaching it to work softly on the flat, jump a course or stand quietly in a show ring is a patient, months-long job. The riders who do this work well are the people who give retired racehorses their futures, and the costs they carry are real: feed, farriery, lessons, travel and entry fees.

Our sponsorship helps with those costs and backs a rider through their competition year, including events such as Equimillion.

The sponsorship does more than help one rider. It shows our owners that their involvement with a horse does not end at the winning post. It puts the Kurrinda name behind the people doing the hard work of retraining. And it helps build the community of riders and buyers who give ex-racehorses their second careers, which is the community our own retired horses rely on.

For Our Owners

What this means when you buy a share

When you buy a share in a Kurrinda horse, you are buying into the whole of that horse's life with us, not just its racing career. In practice that means a few things.

01

We plan for retirement before it arrives

We talk with our trainers about each horse’s soundness, temperament and form, so that we retire horses while they are sound and still have plenty to give a new rider, rather than racing them until there is nothing left.

02

We match each horse to the right next step

A sensible, sound stayer like A Dime Approach suits a very different home from a horse who will be happiest as a quiet pleasure mount. Finding the right fit, whether through a rider we know, a retraining program or Racing NSW’s Team Thoroughbred NSW, gives each horse the best chance of thriving.

03

We keep our owners in the loop

Our owners shared the highs and lows of the racing career, and they deserve to know where their horse has gone and how it is getting on. Seeing a former racehorse win a ribbon or hearing that it has become a much-loved family horse is a genuine highlight of ownership.

04

And we put something back

Through our annual rider sponsorship and our support for events like Equimillion, we help build the pathways that every retired thoroughbred depends on, including horses from other stables.

In Closing

The finish line is not the end

Racing gives us extraordinary days. A win at Newcastle, a hard-fought stayers' race at Colac, a filly who trials brilliantly and gives her owners hope: these are the moments that bring people into racing and keep them there. But the true measure of a syndicator is not only how many winners it trains. It is how well it looks after its horses when the winning stops.

Sovereign Dane, Sizzle Nickel and A Dime Approach each gave their owners something different. Each of them deserves a good life long after their final race, and helping them find it is one of the most important things we do.
