Electrifying Sprinter Giga Kick to come back his best 2024

TAB Everest winner Giga Kick on the road to recovery as he looks to reach the heights of the top sprinters again, Kurrinda Bloodstock offers owners the chance to get involved in potential high class sprinters like Giga Kick and one day dream of similar success

Pantoja, who is also prepared by Giga Kick’s trainer Clayton Douglas, will debut at Bendigo on Wednesday

Giga Kick might be a few months away from returning to the races, but his three-quarter-brother Pantoja will be in action at Bendigo on Wednesday.

The two-year-old Pariah gelding, who is also prepared by Giga Kick’s trainer Clayton Douglas, will debut in the Dunlop Pitson & Jenkins Civil 2YO Maiden (1100m) that kicks off the card.

Like Giga Kick, Pantoja is by a son of Redoute’s Choice out of Rekindled Applause and Rod Douglas, racing manager for owner/breeder Jonathan Munz, said while he is not expected to emulate his The Everest-winning brother, he has his share of talent.

“He’s nowhere near in Giga Kick’s league, but I think he’s going to be a nice horse that will probably have one run then a breather and hopefully measure up to better things as a three-year-old,” Douglas said.

Pantoja, who is named after UFC competitor Alexandre Pantoja, is Rekindled Applause’s 11th foal and her first following Giga Kick after she missed to Showtime in the 2019 breeding season.

He has drawn barrier seven in Wednesday’s 12-horse event, but will come into six if second emergency Fort Laramie does not gain a start, with Ben Allen to ride.

Pantoja has scored two narrow-but-soft jumpout wins this campaign, the first over 800m at Sandown on April 18 before a 750m success at Balnarring on May 8.

“He worked good here at Mornington on Saturday morning on the course proper, so they’ll know he’s there,” Douglas said.

“I’ll be surprised if he doesn’t run in the first three. He can certainly win if everything goes his way.”

Pantoja is not the only close relation to a multiple Group 1 winner making his debut at Bendigo with the Annabel Neasham-trained Hey Bro’unga, a brother to Mo’unga, to have his first start in the 1400m maiden that is the second event.

Douglas also provided an update on Giga Kick, who continues his slow rehabilitation from a serious hamstring injury that kept him out of the autumn.

“He’ll start and do some faster work, even time work, in the next few weeks and then we’ll look at how wet it is in Melbourne,” Douglas said of the Scissor Kick gelding.

“We might head him interstate and do some work with him there and get him up and trialling, I’d say, in about six or seven weeks.

“We might give him a couple of trials, make sure he’s right, then give him a breather and have him back ready to go early in the spring.”

Clayton Douglas reveals that his star sprinter Giga Kick is gearing up for a return to the racetrack, potentially as early as July.

After recovering from muscle tears, Giga Kick has matured physically and is in excellent condition.

Douglas has earmarked The Everest in October as the ultimate goal for the four-year-old, with plans for a possible comeback race at Caulfield in July, possibly the Sir John Monash Stakes.

Douglas is gradually increasing Giga Kick’s workload and monitoring his progress closely.

Despite the challenges of injury, Douglas and his team are excited to have Giga Kick back and are optimistic about his future performances.

Champion jockey Craig Williams has refused to buy into speculation surrounding his association with last year’s Everest winner Giga Kick.

Williams has won five of nine rides on the super sprinter with the Group 1 All Aged Stakes and Doomben 10,000 triumphs accompanying The Everest victory.

However, Williams’s association with Giga Kick could be in jeopardy if radio comments from Rod Douglas, racing manager for Giga Kick’s owner Johnathan Munz, come to fruition.

Douglas indicated Williams could be sacked as Giga Kick’s jockey this week after producing a below-par ride when the sprinter finished third in last Saturday’s Group 2 McEwen Stakes at The Valley.

But Williams said he could do little about such speculation other than to “stay in his lane”.

“It’s Jonathan Munz’s horse and he makes the call on who rides the horse,” Williams said.

Melbourne Racing

“That’s the way it is.

“He’s been a really good horse to me and I’m not too sure – maybe we’ll all know in the next 48 hours.

“As far as I’m aware, I’m riding the horse until I hear otherwise from Jonathan.”

Williams said he has managed to stay away from the furore simply because he reads or hears little racing media coverage.

“I’ve been riding for 30 years and racing is a very reactive, a very emotional sport,” Williams said.

“I just worry about what I do, riding the horses and being a father.

“I never listen to any comments nor do I read any of the publications.”

Giga Kick has over-run a fading Nature Strip to take out The Everest at Royal Randwick.

Nature Strip took the lead as the pack entered the straight, but faded and was also passed by Private Eye and Mazu to finish fourth.

Giga Kick’s jockey Craig Williams timed his run perfectly to win by a head.

“Extraordinary, stunning,” Bruce MacAvaney said in commentary for Seven as they crossed the finish line.

“You knew he (Nature Strip) was in trouble and it was going to take something special (to win).”
