Jamie Kah Wins The Newmarket:
Jockey Jamie Kah was moved to tears after guiding Cylinder to an emotional win in the Newmarket Handicap at Flemington on Saturday.
It was the second successive win in the Group 1 feature handicap over 1200m for the ‘Royal Blue’ colours of Godolphin after In Secret took out the race last year.
Jamie Kah was to have ridden that filly in last year’s race, but a fall in the VRC Sires’ Produce Stakesearlier in the day sent the jockey to hospital where she battled concussion and other injuries.
The ride went to Dean Holland who gave a faultless display on the filly, but tragically, just over a month later, he died in a race fall at Donald.
Jamie Kah brought up a race-to-race double for Godolphin aboard Cylinder having taken out the Group 2 VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) on Traffic Warden.
Jamie Kah came widest down the Flemington straight 1200m course, Cylinder ($11) scored by 1-¼ lengths from the bookie sites $2.80 favourite Imperatriz with The Astrologist ($101) a neck away third.
Speaking from Sydney following Saturday’s win, trainer James Cummings said the victory was an important win for the Godolphin operation.
Cylinder is a son of Exceed And Excel which announced earlier in the week that he had been retired from stud duties.
Jamie Kah Run Continues:
Superstar jockey Jamie Kah fell agonisingly short in her bid for a second Adelaide Cup, but the South Australian still gave her hometown fans plenty to cheer about with a treble at
Morphettville on Monday just two days after winning the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap for Jamie Kah.
Jamie Kah tasted success with Boognish, Meridius and Austmar on the undercard but they were only a small consolation after the Dan Clarken and Oopy MacGillivray-trained The Map went down by the finest of margins in the two-mile feature.

With the Group 1 monkey off the back of Jamie Kah in her hometown of Adelaide, the leading rider will be looking to go back-to-back on Saturday.
The win aboard Coco Sun in the South Australian Derby was Jamie Kah’s 13th Group 1 victory and while she will never forget her first aboard Harlem in the Australian Cup in 2019, last Saturday’s win meant so much.
Jamie Kah started her career in South Australia and quickly rose through the ranks, establishing herself as the leading rider in Adelaide before, as Tony McEvoy put it, she outgrew the state and moved to Victoria.
After some tough times to begin with, Jamie Kah eventually rose to the top and in the 2000-2021 season became the first jockey to ride more than 100 winners in the Melbourne metropolitan area.
But a South Australian Group 1 was what Jamie Kah harboured, which she finally achieved last Saturday, and she will be looking to go back-to-back when she rides Benedetta in The Goodwood (1200m) at Morphettville on Saturday.
“That was something I’d been looking at for the past couple of months,” Jamie Kah said of her breakthrough Group 1 win in Adelaide.
“It was good having family around, especially having Mum and Dad at the races.” Jamie Kah said.
Benedetta enters Saturday’s race coming off a last start third to Goodwood rival Climbing Star in the Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) on April 27.
Jamie Kah gets aboard Benedetta for the first time on Saturday and explained it was the connections of the mare that had been chasing her.
“The owners had been contacting Jamie Kah’s manager for the last few runs,” Jamie Kah said.
“Jamie Kah was speaking to one of the owners at Warrnambool this year and I had a talk with Lachie.
“Her run in the Sangster was super the other day, so it really was a bit of a no-brainer.”
Benedetta has come up with barrier three on Saturday and Jamie Kah said she was not at all worried about the inside draw.
“You want to draw well there,” Jamie Kah said.
“They have been getting off the rail a bit lately in the last few meetings, but the rail has been absolutely fine.
“Jamie Kah is happy to be drawn in and hug the rail and save as much ground as we can.
“It would be special to win The Goodwood. She’s been around the mark, and she’s just got to find half-a-length on her Sangster run.”
