And who knows? One day, you might find yourself cheering on your very own runner in the Stradbroke Handicap, sharing in the legacy and excitement that has defined Australian racing for over a century.

The Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) has been turned on its head following Tuesday’s barrier draw, with local fairytale Antino dealt a car park barrier draw.

Tony Gollan’s star galloper drew barrier 20, however, it was worse news for the connections of Doomben 10,000 winner Bella Nipotina, drawing even wider in barrier 21.

It was enough for bookmakers to turn the market on its head, with Godolphin gun Vilana the new $6.50 favourite, while Antino drifted to $7.50.

Gollan wasn’t concerned by the draw, saying his star needs room to move.

“I didn’t come here worrying too much about the gates, the stats say you can win from anywhere,” he said. “The key has been keeping him fresh for the 1400m.

“I’m not worried about where he is drawn, he likes to get out and chase, he likes a bit of room and he will get plenty of that out there.”

Ironically, Antino’s stablemate Freedom Rally drew perfectly in barrier five, despite currently being the first emergency and facing an uphill battle to get a start in the $3m Stradbroke Handicap feature.

Gollan hasn’t given up hope of getting a start in the Stradbroke Handicap, saying Freedom Rally will be a live chance should he get a start.

“If Freedom Rally gets a run, he would be well in this market for the Stradbroke Handicap,” Gollan said.

BARRIER DRAW WINNERS AND LOSERS

WINNERS

Magic Time has drawn well in 9, and will come into 7 if the emergencies are scratched. Freedom Rally would be a big chance from barrier 5, however, the first emergency needs a horse above him to pull out of the Stradbroke Handicap to sneak into the field.

The Goodwood winner Benedetta has drawn perfectly in barrier 6 for the Stradbroke Handicap.

LOSERS

Bella Nipotina’s task has become incredibly tough from barrier 21. If the scratchings come out, she will jump from gate 17 in the field of 18. Amenable would have liked to have drawn closer than 16 in the Stradbroke Handicap.

Antino usually settles back so gate 20 isn’t the worst, but a middle alley would have been preferable.

Stefi Magnetica will need a gun Zac Lloyd ride to figure from barrier 19. Vilana has drawn 14, which isn’t ideal, however, he will come into barrier 11 if the emergencies are scratched. Still, connections would have preferred to draw closer to the rails

Here To Shock 3 734x460
Lindsay Park and jockey Regan Bayliss will attempt to secure another Group 1 win, this time in Brisbane in the form of the Stradbroke Handicap.

Lindsay Park has turned back the clock in their bid to win the feature Stradbroke handicap during the Brisbane Winter Carnival by joining forces with Regan Bayliss.

Bayliss will ride the Ben, Will and J D Hayes-trained Here To Shock in the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday.

Lindsay Park and Bayliss teamed for three Group 1 victories in 2017 and 2018 with Redkirk Warrior winning two Newmarket Handicaps and a Lightning Stakes down the straight at Flemington.

Shortly after, Bayliss headed to Hong Kong for a stint and after returning to Melbourne when his sojourn finished, he moved to Sydney where he is currently based.

Bayliss has ridden a further three Group 1 victories in Sydney and will look to add the illustrious Stradbroke Handicap.

A quarter of Bayliss’ 528 victories to date were for Lindsay Park when David and Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig were at the helm.

In the years since moving to Sydney and with the Hayes brothers taking over the reins at Lindsay Park, Bayliss has only had two rides in Sydney for them, finishing out of the money on both occasions, the most recent being at Scone last month.

But Here To Shock enters the 2024 Stradbroke Handicap in top form, winning two of his four starts for the campaign.

A winner of nine of his 29 starts, Here To Shock won the Group 3 Victoria Handicap (1400m) at Caulfield on April 6 while at his most recent outing he captured the Group 3 BRC Sprint (1350m) at Doomben on May 25.

Ben Hayes said the gelding has trained on brilliantly since that victory.

“We’re very happy with him. He’s been training well. He’s done everything right,” Hayes said.

“He’s well-weighted in the Stradbroke handicap and he’s drawn a good gate.

“He’s three weeks into the Stradbroke Handicap and it has been a long-range plan for us to get him there.

“He’s a horse in form and he’ll run well.”

Here To Shock drew gate one in the barrier draw for the Stradbroke Handicap that was conducted on Tuesday evening and is currently a $19 chance in betting.
