Electrifying Martini Mumma steps up to make it a perfect 3 in a row at Rosehill

Martini Mumma steps up to make it a hat-trick at Rosehill for Kosciusko winning trainer Matthew Dale now sets her sights on some listed back type at the Scone cup Carnival

Rising star Martini Mumma continued her rapid rise through the ranks with a runaway win at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday.

Martini Mumma only won her maiden three starts back but is heading to stakes level next after completing her hat-trick with an easy win in the TAB Highway (1100m).

“This was as strong a Highway as I’ve contested and Martini Mumma was very impressive,” trainer Matthew Dale said.

“The way Martini Mumma settled, getting in behind them, tracked up, bumped her way out and raced clear, it was a big effort. She will go to Scone for the Denise’s Joy Stakes next month.”

Martini Mumma defied a betting drift after easing from $2.80 out to $4.20 and scored by a widening two-and-a-half lengths from Tanglewood ($6.50) with Wilbury ($18) one-and-a-quarter lengths away third.

Perennial was backed into $4 favouritism but had to work hard early to cross from his wide barrier and lead before tiring to finish fifth.

Dale, who is based at Goulburn, has prepared some classy gallopers most notably top sprinter Fell Swoop, a multiple stakes winner and three-time Group 1 placegetter, so the trainer knows what is required for a horse to be competitive at the elite level and is adamant Martini Mumma has sufficient natural talent.

“Martini Mumma has taken a bit of management,” Dale said.

“Martini Mumma pulls harder than any horse in the stable, she pulls day in and day out, but is improving every day.

“Only two starts ago Martini Mumma wobbled about in her maiden, then last start she wanted to lay in when she hit the front, but today she was 10 out of 10 with her race craft.”

Martini Mumma ripped home in under 34s for her final 600m sectional and was being eased down near the line as she put a margin on her rivals.

Dale confirmed Martini Mumma will now be aimed at the Listed $200,000 Denise’s Joy Stakes (1100m) at Scone on May 18.

“I said to the owners before the race that this is a big test for Martini Mumma, we are throwing her in the deep end,” Dale said.

“She’s extremely raw and I said if she can win this then she justifies a crack at stakes grade.

“I knew we were jumping a few levels today and I thought if Martini Mumma could do it – and Martini Mumma has won really well today – then I will give Martini Mumma the chance at Scone.”

Star apprentice Dylan Gibbons left no one in any doubt as to his opinion of Martini Mumma: “I’ll see you in Scone,” he told Dale.

Gibbons was also impressed by Martini Mumma’s race sense and impressive burst of acceleration.

“Martini Mumma jumped well and we got a beautiful run,” Gibbons said.

“If Martini Mumma had more to chase, I reckon Martini Mumma could go even quicker.”
