Half Yours: Why the Melbourne Cup Hero Is Still on Track and Chasing More Racing History

In an era where many elite Thoroughbreds are retired to stud after achieving major success, the story of Half Yours continues to capture the imagination of racing fans across Australia.

The chestnut gelding has already secured his place in Australian racing folklore after a remarkable 2025 campaign that culminated in victories in both the Caulfield Cup and the Melbourne Cup. Yet despite reaching the pinnacle of Australian staying ranks, Half Yours remains in training and continues to pursue new targets.

For owners, trainers, and racing enthusiasts, the decision to keep Half Yours racing is both exciting and refreshing. Rather than disappearing into retirement immediately after achieving greatness, the popular gelding remains on the racetrack, giving fans the opportunity to continue following one of the country’s most admired stayers.

At a time when racing careers often seem shorter than ever, Half Yours represents something increasingly rare: a champion racehorse still competing and adding new chapters to an already remarkable story.

A Fairytale Spring Carnival

The rise of Half Yours was one of the defining stories of Australian racing in 2025.

Trained by the father-and-son combination of Tony and Calvin McEvoy, the gelding emerged from relative obscurity to become the nation’s leading staying horse.

His breakthrough came when he captured the Caulfield Cup, creating history for jockey Jamie Melham, who became the first female rider to win the famous handicap. Only weeks later, the partnership returned to Flemington and produced an even greater achievement when Half Yours stormed home to win the Melbourne Cup.

The victories transformed Half Yours from a talented stayer into a household name.

Winning either race is enough to define a career.

Winning both in the same spring elevates a horse into a completely different category.

Why Retirement Was Never an Option

One of the unique aspects of Half Yours’ story is that retirement was never the automatic choice.

As a gelding, Half Yours does not possess the breeding value of an entire colt. While many elite colts are retired early to begin lucrative stud careers, geldings have the opportunity to continue racing without that commercial pressure.

This allows connections to focus on:

  • racing success
  • owner enjoyment
  • sporting achievement

rather than breeding economics.

For the ownership group, continuing to race Half Yours offered the chance to build on an already extraordinary career.

And for racing fans, it meant one of Australia’s most popular horses would remain visible on the track.

The Return Campaign

After a well-earned break following his Melbourne Cup triumph, Half Yours returned to work with the McEvoy stable and began preparations for a fresh campaign.

His first race back came in the Group 1 All Aged Stakes at Randwick in April 2026. While the race was well short of his preferred distance range, the performance encouraged connections. Trainer Calvin McEvoy reported that the gelding’s closing sectionals were excellent despite racing in conditions that did not suit him.

Importantly, the horse pulled up well.

That was perhaps the most significant takeaway.

When dealing with elite stayers, maintaining soundness is often the greatest challenge.

The fact that Half Yours returned in good order suggested there was still plenty of racing left in the talented gelding.

Queensland Once Again

Following his autumn return, connections outlined a Queensland Winter Carnival campaign.

The plan included:

  • the Group 2 Hollindale Stakes
  • the Group 1 Doomben Cup
  • the Group 2 Q22

all designed to build upon the success he enjoyed in Queensland the previous year.

Queensland played a crucial role in the development of Half Yours.

Before becoming a dual Cup winner, the gelding enjoyed significant success during a Queensland campaign, including a breakthrough staying victory that helped establish him as a future Cups prospect. The McEvoy stable has openly acknowledged the importance of that Queensland experience in shaping the horse’s career.

Returning north therefore represented more than just another campaign.

It was a return to the state that helped launch one of Australian racing’s great modern stories.

The Importance of Durability

One reason Half Yours continues to resonate with racing fans is his durability.

Modern racing places enormous physical demands on Thoroughbreds.

Maintaining a horse at elite level requires:

  • careful conditioning
  • expert veterinary care
  • intelligent placement
  • patient management

Recent research into Thoroughbred training and injury prevention highlights the importance of balancing workload and recovery throughout a horse’s career. Studies suggest that strategic rest periods and carefully managed training programs play a major role in reducing injury risk and extending racing longevity.

The McEvoy stable appears to have mastered that balance with Half Yours.

His ability to remain sound while competing at the highest level is a testament to both the horse and the team around him.

A Horse Fans Can Follow

One challenge facing modern racing is the rapid turnover of star horses.

Fans often become attached to champions only to see them retire shortly after reaching elite status.

Half Yours provides a different experience.

Supporters have the opportunity to continue following his career:

  • through new campaigns
  • new rivals
  • new racing challenges

That continuity helps build stronger connections between racing and its audience.

Fans enjoy following horses with stories.

And few horses possess a story as compelling as Half Yours.

The Ownership Dream

Part of the appeal of Half Yours is the ownership story behind him.

The gelding is raced by a diverse syndicate that includes business leaders, racing enthusiasts, and first-time major race winners.

Their journey demonstrates one of the enduring attractions of Thoroughbred racing.

A group of owners can come together, buy a horse, and experience something extraordinary.

The dream that fuels syndication is precisely what Half Yours delivered:

  • a Caulfield Cup
  • a Melbourne Cup
  • millions in prizemoney
  • unforgettable memories

For every owner in Australia, Half Yours represents the possibility that their own horse could one day achieve something similar.

What Makes Him Special

Many good horses win races.

Few become truly memorable.

Half Yours possesses qualities that elevate him beyond simple statistics.

He is:

  • tough
  • genuine
  • versatile
  • durable

His racing style also appeals to fans.

Rather than relying solely on early speed, he often builds momentum throughout a race and sustains a powerful finishing effort.

Those characteristics make him exciting to watch and difficult to dismiss.

Can He Add More Major Wins?

That is the question racing fans continue to ask.

Can Half Yours add further Group 1 victories to his resume?

Can he continue competing at the highest level?

The answer will ultimately depend on:

  • soundness
  • placement
  • competition
  • racing luck

But the early signs from his return campaign have been encouraging. Connections have repeatedly expressed confidence that the gelding still possesses the ability to compete in major races.

For racing supporters, that possibility is exciting.

Champions who continue racing create anticipation.

Every start becomes another opportunity to witness something special.

A Modern Racing Hero

Australian racing has always embraced horses that remain in training and continue competing beyond a single successful season.

The public tends to gravitate toward horses that:

  • show resilience
  • overcome challenges
  • continue returning for more

Half Yours fits that mould perfectly.

His journey from emerging stayer to dual Cup winner has already secured his place in racing history.

Anything achieved from this point forward only adds to an already remarkable legacy.

Looking Ahead

The future remains bright for Half Yours.

The Queensland campaign offers another opportunity to demonstrate his ability against quality opposition, while longer-term targets remain available should he continue performing at elite level.

Regardless of what happens next, one fact remains clear:

Half Yours is still on the track.

And for racing fans, that is excellent news.

Because champions are not remembered solely for the races they win.

They are remembered for the stories they create, the excitement they generate, and the moments they share with the public.

Half Yours has already given Australian racing some unforgettable memories.

The fact that he remains in training means there may still be more chapters to write in what has become one of the sport’s most compelling modern stories.

Get Involved with Kurrinda Bloodstock Syndications In 2026

Racehorse ownership has long captured the imagination of racing fans, evoking images of thrilling finishes, colourful silks, and the pride of watching “your horse” succeed on the big stage. Yet for many, the perceived barriers to ownership — cost, complexity, and risk — can make the dream seem out of reach.

Kurrinda Bloodstock Syndications changes that equation by offering an accessible, professional, and rewarding pathway into the world of thoroughbred ownership.

At its core, Kurrinda provides a structured syndication platform that allows individuals to purchase a share in quality bloodstock without the burden of sole ownership. This model reduces financial exposure, spreads ongoing costs across a group of committed owners, and ensures that each share comes with expert management — making racehorse ownership both attainable and enjoyable for a wider audience.

Demystifying Ownership Through Expertise

One of Kurrinda’s greatest strengths lies in its professional approach to horse selection and management. Rather than leaving key decisions to chance, Kurrinda combines industry knowledge with rigorous analysis to source bloodstock that shows physical potential, strong pedigrees, and promising athletic traits.

Each yearling, ready-to-race horse, or developing runner is carefully evaluated by bloodstock experts who understand the factors that influence both racing performance and long-term value.

Once a horse is acquired, Kurrinda takes on the administrative load: trainer selection, veterinary coordination, insurance arrangements, and race planning.

Owners receive regular updates and insights, meaning they can stay connected with their horse’s journey without being bogged down by day-to-day logistics. For many, this professional stewardship is the difference between ownership feeling like a burden and becoming an ongoing source of excitement and pride.

Shared Risk, Shared Reward

Traditional horse ownership involves significant upfront costs and ongoing financial responsibilities. By syndicating horses into smaller ownership shares, Kurrinda dramatically lowers the entry point.

Owners participate proportionately in purchase costs and ongoing expenses like training fees, agistment, and transport — but they also share in the thrill of success.

When a horse earns prize money or achieves notable results, owners receive their share of the rewards, enhancing the ownership experience.

This shared model also fosters a sense of community among syndicate members. Whether attending race days together, celebrating placings, or following training progress, syndicate owners often form lasting connections with fellow enthusiasts who share their passion.

Getting involved with Kurrinda Bloodstock Syndications is not just about financial participation — it’s about engagement with the sport.
