Queensland Horse Racing News:
In this blog we will bring you all he latest news in the Queensland Horse Racing Carnival for 2024.

Is The Autumn Sun’s former trainer the man to end the stallion’s string of classic successes at the Queensland Horse Racing carnival?

The recent success of The Autumn Sun’s progeny has given Chris Waller a few ‘proud Dad’ moments, although far from championing the stallion’s success this weekend, Waller will be trying to halt his classic run in the Queensland Derby.

Having overseen the horse’s illustrious racing career, Waller has been chuffed to watch The Autumn Sun getting results as a sire with three of his daughters capturing majors in the past two months.

Autumn Angel became the Arrowfield Stud resident’s first Group 1 winner in the ATC Australian Oaks, Vibrant Sun led home a trifecta for him in the Australasian Oaks before Coco Sun landed the SA Derby.

Queensland Horse Racing Interview:

Waller says watching his former charge forge a successful stud career has been enormously satisfying.

“I’m not amazed, because we backed him from the start, but just proud to see the types come through,” Waller said.

“Coming into mature age, they are what you’d expect.

“Not all stallions do it, but I’ve just come back from the Magic Millions mares’ sale and they were all talking about him.”

Queensland Horse Racing Interview:

The Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman-trained Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman will bid to keep The Autumn Sun’s hot streak going when she lines up as favourite in Saturday’s Queensland Derby (2400m).

Ironically, it is the Waller-trained Tannhauser, a son of another noted Arrowfield stallion in Dundeel, who is regarded as her biggest threat.

Tannhauser claimed the filly’s scalp in the Rough Habit Plate (2000m), his first win as a gelding and, Waller believes, an important confidence boost.

“I think he proved to himself he could do it, and he proved to us he could do it,” Waller said.

“He and us have got a bit more confidence and it’s the right confidence going into a Group One race.”

Queensland Horse Racing Facts:

Chris Waller will be chasing his fourth Queensland Derby at the Queensland Horse Racing carnival and third in the past four years having won it with Kovalica (2023), Kukeracha (2021) and Hawkspur (2013).

Moody has captured it twice at the Queensland Horse racing Carnival with Brambles (2012) and Riva San (2008), the latter one of seven fillies to have triumphed in the staying feature with Autumn Angel bidding to become the eighth.

Craig Williams is having a great run in Queensland Horse racing Carnival.

He followed up a double at Doomben last Saturday … where he scored with Tiger Shark and Golden Boom (in the Chief De Beers) … with two winners from two rides at the Sunshine Coast on Sunday and then he was back at it again with a win at Doomben yesterday.

In the week prior to that, Williams had a midweek winner at Ipswich … that fantastic Group 1 win aboard Bella Nipotina in the Doomben 10,000 on the Saturday and another win at the Sunshine Coast on Sunday.

That’s eight winners, including two doubles and a Group 1 win, for Williams in the six meetings since he based himself at the Queensland Horse racing scene for the Winter Carnival.

Queensland Horse Racing Craig Williams:

There’s nothing really new in that flow of Williams winners, but it just goes to reinforce the fact that it doesn’t matter if it is a showcase metropolitan meeting or a low-key provincial meeting, ‘Willo’ just keeps getting the job done.

That is a clear testament to his ability in the saddle, but, when talking to him, you will find it is his focussed mindset which comes across as his greatest strength.

And one which has played a huge part in Williams’ longevity in terms of riding successfully at the highest level over such a long period of time.

Queensland Horse Racing Craig Williams Interview:

“My job is to ride horses and ride them well, but that is not always smooth sailing,” explained Williams.

“I am the most critical person with regard to my own rides … and I have my team around me who critique me on that.

“We are all trying to be perfect when we go out there. That can be very hard sometimes with the mix of interaction between humans and horses, and sometimes we get it horribly wrong.

“My job is to make certain that doesn’t happen often.”

Queensland Horse Racing Craig Williams:

When Williams has been the target of the keyboards warrior’s discontent, those throwing the barbs would have been better off doing something else with their time because they never even got close to ruffling the feathers of their intended target.

Queensland Horse Racing Craig Williams Interview:

“I know it has been suggested by some that I have had a semi-difficult time of it this season, but I haven’t. I really haven’t,” said Williams, who is clearly at peace and comfortable with his lot in life.

“I see things and evaluate them from my perspective, and I only deal with things that I have to deal with.”

“Social media, for example, is not very social so I don’t partake in it, which I think is an advantage.

“There is a bigger picture in life. I’m blessed. I’m grateful. My family is healthy and well and supportive. Living in Australia makes you very grounded and makes you appreciate every day that you have.

“My perspective is everything is great. Everything’s fine!”

Queensland Horse Racing Craig Williams:

And while that perspective is true for Williams, so too is the positive and relaxed vibe he passes on to everyone he comes into contact with at the track, where he is always polite, friendly and generous to a fault with his time.

Through it all Williams remains one of the true gentleman of the turf and an absolute asset to the Queensland Horse racing industry … and it is great to see racing enthusiasts in Queensland Horse racing enjoying watching him in action.

Bella Nipotina will have to pass a raceday veterinary examination before being permitted to start in Saturday’s $1 million Group 1 Kingsford Smith Cup at Eagle Farm.

The Ciaron Maher-trained mare presented with an issue when the first round of vet tests were conducted on Friday morning.

Racing Queensland stewards deemed her to be showing signs of lameness, but will give her until race morning to determine her suitability to race in the 1300-metre event.

Bella Nipotina:

“Following this morning’s pre-race veterinary examination, (Bella Nipotina) was found to be lame in the near foreleg,” stewards posted on X on Friday morning.

“Will undergo a further examination tomorrow morning prior to scratching time.”

The Kingsford Smith Cup was scheduled to be the 50th start the six-year-old, a winner of eight races.

She registered the second Group 1 win of her career at her most recent outing in the Doomben 10,000.

Queensland Horse Racing Group 1 Betting:

Bella Nipotina sits alongside Think About It and Magic Time on the $6.50 third line of betting in the Kingsford Smith Cup with only $3.90 betting site favourite I Wish I Win and first-up mare In Secret ($5.50) ahead of her.
