Leading Trainer Chris Waller Takes the Exciting Queensland Oaks By Storm in 2024
The more precocious two-year-olds might be in the paddock, but the final two months of the Sydney season are renowned for unearthing late-blooming stars of the future and Chris Waller has unleashed some in the recent weeks.
Ozzmosis launched his career during the post-carnival period 12 months ago before going on the win the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes in the spring, while Doncaster Mile hero Celestial Legend didn’t have his first run until May last year.
Chris Waller is hopeful at least a couple among his quintet of two-year-old runners in Saturday’s Ranvet Handicap (1300m) at Rosehill can follow a similar trajectory, especially Extreme Choice colt Emirate.
A $1 million yearling purchase, Emirate posted a determined debut win on a heavy track at Warwick Farm earlier this month and Chris Waller is keen to raise the bar to Saturday company before putting him in the paddock with a view to bigger targets.
“The plan in giving him another start is to try to lift his experience and learn a bit more about him ahead of the spring,” Chris Waller said.
“I think he will measure up against some good horses in the spring as a three-year-old.
“He’s got a nice draw (barrier one) and he should be very hard to beat again.” said Chris Waller
Chris Waller will also saddle two juveniles for Hermitage Thoroughbreds, filly Concordia Wind who heads to town after claiming a Gosford maiden at her first start, and Mr Artemisia, who has finished runner-up in his only two appearances.
Both have earned themselves a shot at Saturday grade and Chris Waller isn’t ruling out a belated Queensland carnival bid for the latter, who holds a nomination for the JJ Atkins (1600m).
“She (Concordia Wind) was very good on debut in a much easier race than Saturday, but she did win well and 1300 will suit her from the nice draw (barrier seven),” Chris Waller said.
“The other horse is drawn wide (barrier 14), but he’s still a chance of getting to Queensland because I do think he’s a miler. It was just disappointing to see the draw.
“He could easily be a Spring Champion (Stakes) horse.”
Multi-million-dollar filly Tutta La Vita sold by the Chris Waller stable has been scratched from Saturday’s $700,000 Group 1 Queensland Oaks and will not race again in Australia.
But the daughter of The Autumn Sun is not finished as a racehorse, set to continue her career in the United States where the Breeders Cup meeting will be a target.
Tutta La Vita was bought by Resolute Racing’s John Stewart for $3.2 million at last month’s Chairman’s Sale and has had one run in Australia for Stewart, for an eighth placing in The Roses at Doomben.
As sad as trainer Chris Waller is to see Tutta La Vita go, he has endorsed her exportation and is excited about seeing a product of his former star three-year-old colt perform in the US.
“She’s not going to run, she’s going to go to America, which I’m fully supportive of,” Chris Waller revealed in his weekly stable video update when discussing his Oaks team.
“You’ll probably see her run in the Breeders Cup, which is normally the end of October.
“Resolute Racing and the team are going to take her there, so it will be good to have The Autumn Sun flying the flag for Australia and certainly Tutta La Vita.”
Tutta La Vita has only won one of her 12 starts, but has been placed three times at Group 1 level from 1400m to 2000m when trained by Chris Waller.
This year’s Breeders Cup meeting, at Del Mar on November 1 and 2, is headlined by the US$7m Breeders Cup Classic (2012m) on dirt and US$5m Breeders Cup Turf (2414m), but also features the Breeders Cup Fillies & Mares Turf, a 2213m event worth US$2m.
Tutta La Vita’s scratching reduces Chris Waller’s Oaks hand to five runners and two emergencies, headlined by favourite Scarlet Oak.
The Kiwi recruit narrowly defeated stablemate Mare Of Mt Buller in The Roses and also has well-supported SA Derby hard-luck story Ahuriri for competition, but Chris Waller said Scarlet Oak deserves to be considered the horse to beat.
“She’s probably our No 1 seed, I don’t like to have favourites, but I think what she did last start – in fact, in her limited runs to date – would announce her as a pretty serious horse on the rise,” Chris Waller said.
“It’s another step and a step up in distance, (there’s) a lot of boxes unticked, but a filly of her class should be very hard to bowl.”
The Chris Waller trained former Kiwi has been superb since arriving down under and off the back of her win in the key lead, she holds the call at $3.60.
Kiwi raider Molly Bloom sits at $5.50 on the second line of betting, alongside the well tried Ahuriri. Mare Of Mt Buller is at $9.50.
