Mitch Freedman’s Exciting G1 winner Attrition back after setback 2024

Trainer Mitch Freedman had hoped to be in Sydney for the opening day of The Championships at Randwick rather than chasing another Stakes race at Caulfield.
The Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) had been the target for the Mitch Freedman-trained Attrition when the entire commenced his autumn campaign, but a setback after his first-up run in February will instead see the entire run in the Group 3 Victoria Handicap (1400m) on Saturday.Mitch Freedman’s Attrition suffered a sprained fetlock when finishing last in the Group 1 Futurity Stakes (1400m) on February 24 which required time and effort to get over and patience from trainer Mitch Freedman.

Mitch Freedman put the blame for the injury on the track that day as Attrition had never had a soundness issue in his previous 10 starts.

Attrition showed he had got his campaign back on track with a Donald trial win on March 20, although Mitch Freedman is wary and wants to see him do again on race day.

Mitch Freedman said Attrition, who will be ridden by Beau Mertens, will revert to his usual pattern of being ridden off the speed after drawing barrier nine in the 12-horse field.

The Group 1 All-Aged Stakes (1400m) at Randwick on April 20 looms as a potential target in Sydney for Attrition, although Mitch Freedman said he may look further north with the four-year-old.

Mitch Freedman Background:

GROUP 1 TRAINER

Mitch Freedman took a slight detour to his father and grandfather, but racing was always in his blood.

Mitch Freedman’s grandfather was a bookmaker and his father worked for him, meaning Mitchell was always around horses and racing from a young age.

Mitch Freedmen worked for some astute Victorian minds in the period before getting his licence, spending time with Kathryn and Craig Durden, Andrew Payne and Dan O’Sullivan before starting a lengthy period working for the Melbourne Cup-winning trainer Darren Weir.

Mitch Freedman graduated to become the foreman of Weir’s Warrnambool stable, which made him responsible for looking after many talented horses, including the dual Group 1 winner Platelet, top mare May’s Dream and the brilliant Puissance De Lune, who scored a memorable runaway win on Emirates Stakes day in 2012.

Mitch Freedman’s time with Weir showed him the benefits of beach work and varying routines for horses to leave them mentally and physically fresh throughout their preparations.

Mitch Freedman also travelled overseas to gain some insight into European training techniques with top trainers David Simcock and Andrew Balding, which when added to his local education, gave Mitch Freedman a strong training philosophy that he follows to prepare his team.
