The New Moonee Valley Racetrack: Reimagining an Australian Racing Icon

Few racecourses anywhere in the world evoke as much emotion as Moonee Valley.

For well over a century, “The Valley” has been one of Australian racing’s most iconic venues. It has been home to countless champions, unforgettable finishes and, most importantly, the Cox Plate—Australia’s greatest weight-for-age race.

From Phar Lap and Tulloch to Kingston Town, Sunline, So You Think, Winx, Romantic Warrior and Via Sistina, the Valley has witnessed some of the sport’s defining moments. Its unique atmosphere, tight circuit and famous short home straight have made it one of the most recognisable racecourses in world racing.

But like every great sporting venue, there comes a time when evolution becomes necessary.

The Moonee Valley Racing Club has embarked on one of the most ambitious redevelopment projects in Australian sporting history. The “Valley of Tomorrow” will transform the historic racecourse into a state-of-the-art racing, entertainment and community precinct while preserving the traditions that have made Moonee Valley legendary.

The new Moonee Valley racetrack is far more than a facelift—it is a complete reimagining of one of Australian racing’s most treasured homes.

Honouring More Than 140 Years of History

Moonee Valley first opened in 1883, making it one of Australia’s oldest and most historic racecourses.

For generations, it has been synonymous with innovation. It became Australia’s home of night racing, introduced a unique spectator experience with grandstands close to the action, and hosted one of the world’s premier weight-for-age contests.

Its compact layout created a style of racing unlike any other.

Horses had little time to balance before the home turn.

Jockeys needed split-second decision-making.

Crowds felt almost on top of the runners as they thundered down the famous short straight.

That intimacy became part of Moonee Valley’s identity.

Preserving that atmosphere while creating a modern racing venue has been one of the redevelopment’s greatest challenges.

Why Redevelopment Was Necessary

Although beloved by racing fans, the existing infrastructure had reached the point where major investment was required.

Modern racing venues must cater for far more than race meetings.

They require:

  • World-class horse facilities
  • Modern owner amenities
  • Flexible event spaces
  • Premium hospitality
  • Community engagement
  • Sustainable design
  • Accessibility

Rather than simply refurbishing ageing buildings, the Moonee Valley Racing Club chose to completely reinvent the site.

The result is a redevelopment valued at approximately $3 billion, making it one of the largest projects ever undertaken by an Australian racing club.

The Valley of Tomorrow

The redevelopment has been branded “The Valley of Tomorrow.”

The vision extends well beyond horse racing.

The 40-hectare site will become a mixed-use precinct combining:

  • A world-class racecourse
  • A spectacular new grandstand
  • Community sporting facilities
  • Parks and open space
  • Restaurants and cafés
  • Retail precincts
  • Residential neighbourhoods
  • Wellness and hospitality facilities

The objective is to transform Moonee Valley into a destination that operates every day of the year rather than only on race days.

When complete, the precinct will include approximately 3,000 homes, extensive parkland and vibrant public spaces integrated with the racing venue.

A Completely New Racetrack

Perhaps the most exciting component is the racetrack itself.

Rather than simply resurfacing the existing circuit, the entire course is being realigned.

The new track has been designed using extensive consultation with jockeys, trainers and racing experts to improve both safety and racing quality.

One of the biggest changes is the home straight, which will increase dramatically in length.

The original straight measured just 173 metres, making Moonee Valley famous for its “dash to the line.”

The new straight will extend to approximately 317 metres.

This change should provide horses with greater opportunity to build momentum while reducing the tactical disadvantages faced by backmarkers.

A Wider Racing Surface

The new Moonee Valley track will also be wider.

The existing circuit often produced tightly packed fields, particularly around the home turn.

The redevelopment widens the racing surface by approximately three metres, allowing larger fields and providing jockeys with more room to manoeuvre.

This improvement is expected to enhance both safety and competitiveness.

More importantly, it creates additional opportunities for horses to obtain clear running in feature races such as the Cox Plate.

The Famous Cox Plate Start Remains

Despite the extensive redesign, one of Moonee Valley’s most famous traditions will remain untouched.

The Cox Plate will continue to start near the top of the home straight.

This iconic starting position has become synonymous with Australia’s greatest weight-for-age race.

Retaining that feature ensures continuity between the historic Valley and its exciting future.

While much around it will change, racing fans will still recognise the unique character of the Cox Plate.

A New Grandstand for a New Era

The grandstand redevelopment is equally ambitious.

The new structure will move to the northern boundary of the racecourse and provide dramatically improved viewing opportunities.

Patrons will actually be positioned closer to the racing surface than before, creating an even more immersive experience.

The grandstand itself has been designed to operate throughout the year.

Features include:

  • Premium hospitality suites
  • Restaurants
  • Function spaces
  • Corporate facilities
  • Rooftop viewing
  • Modern owner amenities

An 83-room boutique hotel and wellness facilities are also planned, further reinforcing the site’s transformation into a year-round destination.

Improved Horse Facilities

While spectators will notice the new grandstand, trainers and jockeys will appreciate the upgraded racing infrastructure.

The redevelopment includes:

  • Modern horse stalls
  • Improved tie-up areas
  • Advanced veterinary facilities
  • Enhanced mounting yard
  • New maintenance precinct
  • Better access tunnels for horses

These improvements reflect the growing importance placed upon equine welfare and operational efficiency within modern racing.

Horse welfare has been central to every stage of the planning process.

Building a Community, Not Just a Racecourse

Perhaps the most innovative aspect of the project is its broader vision.

Historically, racecourses were largely dormant between meetings.

The Valley of Tomorrow seeks to change that.

Extensive green spaces will include:

  • Walking trails
  • Sporting fields
  • Playgrounds
  • Running tracks
  • Community parks
  • Open recreation areas

The infield itself will become an active public space rather than remaining inaccessible for most of the year.

This integration between racing and community represents one of the most progressive developments ever attempted by an Australian racing club.

Temporary Farewell

Following the 2025 Cox Plate, Moonee Valley closed to allow demolition and construction to begin.

During the redevelopment period:

  • The 2026 Cox Plate will be conducted at Flemington.
  • Many Moonee Valley race meetings have been transferred to other Victorian racecourses.
  • Major demolition works commenced immediately after closure.

Although emotional for many racing fans, the temporary relocation ensures the redevelopment can proceed efficiently.

The Return of Racing

Current planning anticipates that:

  • New turf will be laid during 2026.
  • The track will then undergo an extended consolidation period.
  • Racing is expected to return in August 2027.

This lengthy preparation reflects the importance of producing a first-class racing surface capable of hosting Australia’s biggest races.

A New Era for the Cox Plate

No race is more closely associated with Moonee Valley than the Cox Plate.

The redevelopment ensures Australia’s championship weight-for-age contest will return to a venue worthy of its international reputation.

The longer straight.

The wider track.

The improved spectator facilities.

All should enhance the experience for horses, jockeys, owners and racing fans alike.

Importantly, the unique atmosphere that has defined Cox Plate Day remains central to the design philosophy.

The Valley may look different.

But its soul remains unchanged.

Protecting Tradition While Embracing Innovation

Redeveloping an iconic sporting venue is never easy.

Every change attracts scrutiny.

Every decision balances history against progress.

The Moonee Valley Racing Club has consistently emphasised that preserving the venue’s heritage has been just as important as introducing modern infrastructure.

The challenge has never been replacing history.

It has been ensuring future generations create their own.

Looking Ahead

When the gates finally open on the new Moonee Valley in 2027, Australian racing will welcome one of the most advanced thoroughbred venues in the Southern Hemisphere.

It will remain home to the Cox Plate.

It will continue hosting elite racing.

It will provide improved facilities for horses and participants.

And it will become a thriving destination for the wider Melbourne community every day of the year.

Conclusion

The new Moonee Valley racetrack represents one of the boldest and most exciting projects in Australian racing history.

Rather than simply modernising ageing infrastructure, the redevelopment completely reimagines what a racecourse can be.

A world-class racing venue.

A community hub.

A residential neighbourhood.

An entertainment destination.

A place where history and innovation coexist.

For more than 140 years, Moonee Valley has been the stage upon which champions have become legends.

Soon, those champions will once again thunder down a new home straight, race past a spectacular new grandstand and compete in front of another generation of passionate racing fans.

The Valley is changing.

But its greatest tradition remains exactly the same.

It will continue to be the home of champions.

Get Involved with Kurrinda Bloodstock Syndications In 2026

Racehorse ownership has long captured the imagination of racing fans, evoking images of thrilling finishes, colourful silks, and the pride of watching “your horse” succeed on the big stage. Yet for many, the perceived barriers to ownership — cost, complexity, and risk — can make the dream seem out of reach.

Kurrinda Bloodstock Syndications changes that equation by offering an accessible, professional, and rewarding pathway into the world of thoroughbred ownership.

For nearly five decades, Kurrinda Bloodstock has been a leader in Australian horse racing, offering exceptional opportunities to own and race elite thoroughbreds. Whether you’re looking to buy a racehorse share, invest in a race horse syndicate, or browse our race horses for sale, we make the journey into racehorse ownership seamless and rewarding.

As one of Australia’s most trusted names in racing syndicates, we provide exclusive access to thoroughbred horses for sale, expert trainers, and an ownership experience that brings you closer to the action than ever before.

At its core, Kurrinda provides a structured syndication platform that allows individuals to purchase a share in quality bloodstock without the burden of sole ownership. This model reduces financial exposure, spreads ongoing costs across a group of committed owners, and ensures that each share comes with expert management — making racehorse ownership both attainable and enjoyable for a wider audience.

Demystifying Ownership Through Expertise

One of Kurrinda’s greatest strengths lies in its professional approach to horse selection and management. Rather than leaving key decisions to chance, Kurrinda combines industry knowledge with rigorous analysis to source bloodstock that shows physical potential, strong pedigrees, and promising athletic traits.

We are one of the only Syndicators that owns and operates their own spelling farm where all of the horses are agisted. We have complete control over our horses’ nutritional requirements and their preparation from the paddock to the track – this sets us apart and the results speak for themselves.

Each yearling, ready-to-race horse, or developing runner is carefully evaluated by bloodstock experts who understand the factors that influence both racing performance and long-term value.

Once a horse is acquired, Kurrinda takes on the administrative load: trainer selection, veterinary coordination, insurance arrangements, and race planning.

Owners receive regular updates and insights, meaning they can stay connected with their horse’s journey without being bogged down by day-to-day logistics. For many, this professional stewardship is the difference between ownership feeling like a burden and becoming an ongoing source of excitement and pride.

Shared Risk, Shared Reward

Traditional horse ownership involves significant upfront costs and ongoing financial responsibilities. By syndicating horses into smaller ownership shares, Kurrinda dramatically lowers the entry point.

Owners participate proportionately in purchase costs and ongoing expenses like training fees, agistment, and transport — but they also share in the thrill of success.

When a horse earns prize money or achieves notable results, owners receive their share of the rewards, enhancing the ownership experience.

This shared model also fosters a sense of community among syndicate members. Whether attending race days together, celebrating placings, or following training progress, syndicate owners often form lasting connections with fellow enthusiasts who share their passion.
