Vilana has firmed into $5 outright favouritism for Saturday’s $3 million showpiece, rocketing into contention with a 3-1/2 length romp at Eagle Farm last weekend when ridden by James Mcdonald.
Unable to make Vilana’s 53kg Stradbroke weight, McDonald was never in contention to stick with him for the feature and trainer James Cummings was having difficulty finding a rider until Clark offered his services prior to the five-year-old’s impressive last-start win.
It is looking like an astute decision by Clark as he chases a second Stradbroke Handicap (1400m)triumph following Alligator Blood’s victory two years ago.
Vilana has missed a place in the past two renewals of the race, but Clark points out there will be an important difference on Saturday.
“He’s a gelding this time and he is going into the race in the right form,” Clark said.
“He didn’t have to run on Saturday, he would have already made the field, so the fact that James (Cummings) wanted to run him I guess is a good sign that he is happy and thriving.
“He has just got to produce that sort of performance and it will have him somewhere in the finish.
“He has had a couple of goes at the Stradbroke without a result so hopefully it’s third time lucky.”
Clark will also be replacing McDonald in the Group 1 JJ Atkins (1600m) aboard the Chris Waller-trained Imperialist.
McDonald steered the youngster to victory in last Saturday’s Phoenix Stakes (1500m) but had a long-term commitment to the Cummings-trained odds-on favourite Broadsiding.
Clark is more than happy to reunite with Imperialist after riding him two starts ago when he finished fourth on Randwick’s Kensington track.
“He is going to run a mile on his ear and that is one thing that is going to be in his favour,” Clark said.
“Obviously, the favourite has proven he can run it too, but there might be some question marks over some of the other horses running out a strong mile.”
The Group 1 pair form part of a handy program of Eagle Farm rides for Clark, whose book also includes Tulloch Lodge colt Bases Loaded in the Group 3 Gunsynd Classic (1600m) and Waller’s dual Group placegetter Roots in the Group 2 Dane Ripper Stakes (1300m).
No horse engaged in this year’s Stradbroke Handicap can boast a family connection to the race like Stefi Magnetica.
The Bjorn Baker-trained filly is by All Too Hard, who never raced in Queensland, but is from a mare who etched her name into Stradbroke history just over a decade ago.
Mid Summer Music won the 2012 Stradbroke, which broke a 76-year drought for mares in Queensland’s most famous race.
Stefi Magnetica would be added to the select group of horses to win the same Group 1 as their mother if she wins Saturday’s $3 million event at Eagle Farm, but it would be drawing a long bow to say it was a distinction she always seemed destined for.
She is the fifth foal from Mid Summer Music, who has spent most of her post-racing days at Cressfield, and operations manager at that famed Hunter Valley nursery, Liesl Wickson, said Stefi Magnetica was cut from the same cloth as her mother, an unobtrusive daughter of Oamaru Force.
“Mid Summer Music isn’t a mare that stands out in the paddock as a magnificent type, she is on the smaller side and is slight in frame,” Wickson said.
“Her foals have all been typically like her; plain bays mostly, not particularly forward.
“While there is never anything inherently wrong with them, they are just never types that take your breath away. I often describe them as being a bit forgettable – you’ll walk out of the paddock and they won’t be the one you remember.
“However, the mare has an uncanny ability to throw you a saleable yearling, year after year with pristine x-rays and good scopes. Combined with her toughness, she has become one of our better producers.”
The Stradbroke was the high point of a 31-start, 11-win career for Mid Summer Music, which kicked off with a Warracknabeal maiden win.
She sold for $300,000 at the 2013 National Broodmare Sale at the conclusion of her racing career and visited All Too Hard in her first season, producing six-time winner See It Thru.
Second foal Fast Summer Rock (Fastnet Rock) won one of five starts, but she then produced Euphoric Summer (Not A Single Doubt), who won a Magic Millions Ballarat Classic and was twice Stakes-placed, and Group 3 Typhoon Tracy Stakes winner Hellfest (Fastnet Rock).
A trip to Merchant Navy in 2018 failed to realise a foal before she returned to All Too Hard for what was the mating that produced Stefi Magnetica, which confirmed Mid Summer Music as an ideal match for the son of Casino Prince.
“On an individual level, Mid Summer Music was a fabulously tough, sound racemare, winning at the top level as a seven-year-old (and) All Too Hard will consistently throw good-boned, sound stock,” Wickson said of the rising 19-year-old, who is again in-foal to All Too Hard.
“I think the mating gets you perhaps not the best-looking animal but a sound athlete with a tough will to win and that is always going to work.”
Jim Clarke and Cunningham Thoroughbreds teamed up with Baker to buy Stefi Magnetica for $140,000 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale and her racing career boasts a similar grassroots feel to her mother.
Her first win came in an 1100m race at Wellington, while her only other success has been in a 1010m benchmark 58 at Orange.
Just four starts later, however, she finished runner-up in the Group 1 Surround Stakes (1400m) and stamped her Stradbroke claims with an eye-catching fifth placing in the weight-for-age Group 1 Doomben 10,000.
She rounded out her Stradbroke preparations with a third placing in the Group 3 Fred Best Classic (1350m) and will have the services of apprentice jockey Zac Lloyd under just 50kg in the Stradbroke, for which she is a $12 chance.
Tyler Schiller has found himself in an unusual position just days out from the Stradbroke Handicap as he works double time to prepare for Queensland’s premier race.
The Sydney jockey has been booked to ride two horses, Prince Of Boom, who is safely in the field, and first emergency Freedom Rally.
If the latter gains a start, Schiller will be aboard the Tony Gollan-trained gelding, but if he doesn’t, he will partner Prince Of Boom for Robert Heathcote.
Given that he may not know the final make-up of the Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) field until final scratchings on Saturday morning, Schiller is fully preparing himself for both scenarios.
That includes getting down to 51.5kg in the event Freedom Rally sneaks into the line-up in a situation the talented young hoop admits he hasn’t experienced before.
“I definitely haven’t,” Schiller said.
“Rob Heathcote asked my manager a couple of weeks ago if I could ride him (Prince Of Boom) and I already had Freedom Rally floating around, but he is first emergency.
“I’ve got the option of both, but if Freedom Rally gets a run, I’ll be on him.
“They’re both in good form but they’re two different horses. Prince Of Boom is a high-roller and Freedom Rally gets back.
“I think the drop in the weight will help Freedom Rally and he’s a really good chance if he gets a run.”
Freedom Rally is $13 in pre-post markets having finished a luckless second in the BRC Sprint (1350m) two starts ago when he was slow to jump and rattled home to just miss, before his game fourth behind I Wish I Win in the Kingsford Smith Cup (1300m).
Prince Of Boom, specked from $51 into $41, is coming off a third in the BRC Sprint, but is yet to win beyond 1200m.
Schiller will partner Aemelius for Annabel Neasham in the afternoon’s other Group 1, the JJ Atkins (1600m) for the two-year-olds.
The filly is a half-sister to ill-fated stakes winner Brave Mead and was a Randwick winner two starts ago before securing her spot in Saturday’s field with a fighting second to Imperialist in The Phoenix (1500m).
“She’s got plenty of upside. I think she will be better ridden with a bit of cover, and we’ve drawn a good gate just to drop in where she is comfortable,” Schiller said.
“Obviously (favourite) Broadsiding is going to be awfully hard to beat, but it would be nice to be fighting out the finish with him.”
Schiller will be chasing his fourth major and first in Queensland, his maiden Group 1 coming last year aboard Mariamia in The Galaxy, while this year he has added the Canterbury Stakes on Lady Laguna and Doncaster Mile aboard Celestial Legend.
