Previous Royal Ascot winner Big Evs, ridden by Tom Marquand, quickly took the lead in the five-furlong contest. However, Asfoora, guided by jockey Oisin Murphy, made a decisive move in the closing stages. At the furlong marker, the daughter of Australian sire Flying Artie matched strides with the early leader before accelerating to a commanding victory at 5-1 odds. Ed Bethell’s Regional, ridden by Callum Rodriguez, finished second, with the Mick Appleby-trained favorite Big Evs placing third at Royal Ascot.
Asfoora now joins an elite list of Australian winners in this race at Royal Ascot, which includes Choisir (2003), Takeover Target (2006), Miss Andretti (2007), Scenic Blast (2009), and Nature Strip (2022).
A jubilant Dwyer expressed his elation, saying, “We have so many people here, not only the owners of Asfoora but also 40 or 50 of my owners from home who would do anything to have a runner at Royal Ascot. It’s incredible. I think there will be the mother of all parties tonight!”
Dwyer explained their strategy: “We needed a lead-up run at Haydock, so she came over early. We wanted to be here before it got too cold in Australia and too warm here. We came over during a nice transitional period, and she settled in brilliantly, as shown by today’s performance at Royal Ascot.”
Reflecting on his achievement, Dwyer added, “That was my third Group One winner. To do it here, at Royal Ascot, is just amazing.”
Asfoora’s victory at Royal Ascot is a testament to her prowess and the meticulous planning of her team, marking a memorable moment in the history of Australian racing on the international stage.
Asfoora Group 1 at Royal Ascot:
Asfoora gave trainer Henry Dwyer the biggest win of his career when taking out the Group 1 King Charles III Stakes (1000m) at Royal Ascot.
Asfoora became Australia’s sixth winner of the race at Royal Ascot joining sprinting greats Choisir (2003), Takeover Target (2006), Miss Andretti (2007), Scenic Blast (2009) and Nature Strip (2022).
“I’m really struggling for words,” Dwyer said at Royal Ascot.
“We’ve come a long way from Ballarat. Just an amazing experience from start to finish.
“It was a bit of an audacious plan to target Royal Ascot – we copped a bit of stick back home for bringing her over because she wasn’t seen as one of our better sprinters but we were just so confident she was really, really textbook, wheelhouse, five furlongs and she’s proven that today.
“She’s no Black Caviar or Nature Strip but she’s a very good sprinter in her own right and she’s proved she’s up to it at Royal Ascot.”
Asfoora, who collected A$729,000 prizemoney for winning, sprung from an outside gate and trailed Regional and they led the group of six runners to come up the stand side with race favourite Big Evstaking charge of the 11 runners toward the inside rail.
Inside the final 400m, Asfoora started to drift toward the other group of runners in the centre of the track, moved up to challenge Big Evs with a furlong to run before powering away from the field over the latter stages.
Asfoora (5/1) defeated Regional (6/1) by a length with a half-length back to Big Evs (11/4 fav) in third at Royal Ascot.
King Charles III (left) speaks with trainer Henry Dwyer after Asfoora’s Royal Ascot victory.
“Thrilled for connections,” winning jockey Oisin Murphy said. “It’s very brave to come from Australia with a very good horse.
“She performed on the day. How good was she?
“Regional gave me the perfect tow to halfway, he gave me a nice lead. She lugged a little bit right under pressure but how good was she at the line?
“It’s hard to win Group 1s, the King Charles III Stakes is a massive race. I’m delighted. Royal Ascot day one, to win a Group 1, brilliant.”
The victory – Asfoora’s ninth from 20 starts, which took her earnings to more than $2 million – was Dwyer’s third Group 1 success.
VRC chairman Neil Wilson (clapping) delights in Asfoora’s win alongside King Charles III in the Royal Box at Royal Ascot.
Reflecting on previous comments he’d made that he would give away the training game if he hadn’t made it by the age of 30, Dwyer – a former accountant – said he “fully expected to be broke by the age of 30”.
“I was incredibly lucky to have a couple of Group 1 winners in my first year … it’s been a bit of a dry spell since then in terms of Group 1s, but this mare just really deserved one. She’s had so much go against her in the Group 1s she’s run in in Australia.
Connections of Asfoora after winning The King Charles III Stakes at Royal Ascot.
Asfoora charges to the post at Royal Ascot.
“To get a Group 1 at home is great but to be at Royal Ascot and get a Group 1 is just amazing.
“It’s very hard to find these sort of horses when you’ve only got 40 in work. We turn over a few a year but we don’t expect to have these horses, it’s just a luxury to have them.
“For Akram (El-Fakhri), the owner, to entrust me with training her – as I said before, it’s just such a gamble bringing her over, it’s an incredibly expensive trip. We’re getting a bit of help from Royal Ascot but it’s still a very expensive experience and Akram is funding it one-out, she’s not a syndicate horse. He’s paying up for it and I think we’ve more than paid our way.”
Australian Sprinters and Their Success at Royal Ascot
Australia has a storied history of producing world-class sprinters, and their success on the international stage is no more evident than at Royal Ascot. This prestigious British racing festival, held annually in June, has witnessed some of the greatest performances by Australian sprinters, cementing Australia’s reputation as a powerhouse in sprint racing.
Australian Sprinters at Royal Ascot: A Legacy of Speed
Royal Ascot, a jewel in the crown of British horse racing, is renowned for its high-stakes races, regal audience, and unparalleled prestige. For Australian sprinters, the festival represents the ultimate proving ground, a place where legends are born and legacies are solidified.
One of the most memorable Australian victories at Royal Ascot came in 2003 when Choisir stunned the world by winning both the King’s Stand Stakes and the Golden Jubilee Stakes in the same week. Choisir’s victories were a watershed moment, showcasing the exceptional talent emerging from Australia and proving that Australian sprinters could compete—and win—against the best in the world.
Following in Choisir’s hoofprints, Takeover Target, a former taxi driver’s horse turned global sensation, triumphed in the 2006 King’s Stand Stakes. His victory was a rags-to-riches story that captured the hearts of racing enthusiasts worldwide and underscored the tenacity and quality of Australian sprinters.
In 2009, Scenic Blast continued the trend by winning the King’s Stand Stakes, further enhancing the Australian dominance in sprint races at Royal Ascot. This was followed by Starspangledbanner’s victory in the Golden Jubilee Stakes in 2010, solidifying his reputation as one of the finest sprinters of his generation.
Perhaps the most celebrated Australian sprinter at Royal Ascot is Black Caviar, who maintained an unbeaten record of 25 wins in her career. Her nail-biting victory in the 2012 Diamond Jubilee Stakes, despite an injury and a transcontinental journey, remains one of the most thrilling moments in Royal Ascot history. Black Caviar’s success not only affirmed the prowess of Australian sprinters but also captivated an international audience, showcasing the global appeal of Australian horse racing.
