After Declan Bates masterclass ratings guru Dan O’Sullivan says the chasing pack behind Pride Of Jenni in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes could have been 14 lengths closer in the run.
In his review of the Queen Elizabeth Stakes, O’Sullivan said on Monday: “I’ve never seen anything like this race where it was literally two separate events. Pride Of Jenni and Declan Bates in their own race and the pack in a jog and sprint WFA race.”
Champion jockey Shane Dye says “everyone is at fault” for allowing Pride Of Jenni to get so far in front in Saturday’s Queen Elizabeth Stakes.
Dye told Racenet that Pride Of Jenni’s win was “spectacular” and she was clearly the best horse, but the way the race unfolded it was a “no win situation for everyone” but Pride of Jenni and Declan Bates that is.
Replays diehard racing fans have been accustomed to see in modern times are Might And Power’s Caulfield Cup blitz in 1997, Sunline’s Cox Plate romp in 2000, and Lonhro’s off-the-canvas Australian Cup win in 2004 but this performance from Pride of Jenni and Declan Bates.
Of course, we’ve had Black Caviar and Winx, but their best wins were inevitable, almost predictable no one saw this coming from Pride of Jenni and Declan Bates.
Pride of Jenni and Declan Bates, however, will be talked about, and shown on repeat, for generations.
Of all the memorable and freakish wins mentioned above, Pride Of Jenni’s Queen Elizabeth win takes the cake with jockey Declan Bates.
The unheralded Declan Bates pulled the pants down of some of the best jockeys in the world — James McDonald, Nash Rawiller, Blake Shinn and Craig Williams to name a few.
Official GPS data from Racing NSW showed Pride Of Jenni under Declan Bates was 91m in front of Mr Brightside with 700m to go, which is the equivalent of 38 lengths.
That is simply unbelievable for one of Australia’s premier weight-for-age Group 1 races with Pride Of Jenni and Declan Bates .
It was game over after 600m when Jenni got rolling under Declan Bates.
She just got further and further in front, and half way through the race those watching knew they were witnessing something special a masterclass from Pride Of Jenni and Declan Bates.
Her six sub-12 second sectionals between the 1800m and the 600m (11.99, 11.54, 11.11, 11.42, 11.48, 11.60) were insane with Declan Bates aboard.
Trainer Ciaron Maher and jockey Declan Bates.
Five years ago, we watched in awe as Winx won her final race start in the Queen Elizabeth.
This week, we watched in awe as Winx’s yearling sold for $10 million
Surely, nothing could top that?
And then, Pride Of Jenni and Declan Bates comes along and says “hold my beer”.
At a time when racing has been desperate for a new pin-up horse up step Pride of Jenni and Declan Bates, it is a mare who’s first three starts were in maidens at Wangaratta, Ballarat and Mornington now flying the flag.
Sure, the other jockeys might have stuffed up by letting Declan Bates and Pride of Jenni get so far in front, but her Queen Elizabeth win was one for the ages.
Her and Declan Bates simply broke their hearts, and minds.
