Owner of the month for September is a special one as we have our very own farm manager Shane Freer. Shane is very hard working, passionate, and dedicated about his job and he has also got involved as an owner.
Q: How did you get the initial racing bug?
A: A left field entry but having a bet on the trots (harness racing) growing up.
Q: Best thing about your job?
A: Getting to work with the animals I love in the environment I love out in the country where it’s nice and peaceful.
Q: If you could own any racehorse of any era who would it be? And why?
A: Black Caviar, she captured the world and created crowds similar to those in the old days.
Q: Favourite racing moment?
A: Watching One Penny win at Scone. It was my first winner as an owner such a buzz and to have my son there live to see it. Great day!
Q: If you were to invite 3 guests to dinner (dead or alive), who would you invite?
A: Most people go for far out options, as much as I’d love Serena Williams to pop over for a snitty, I’d have to say my mum, dad (both passed now) and my son. Dad was his best mate and unfortunately, my son never got to meet my mum so it would mean everything.
Q: Rabbitohs grand final win or Group 1 winner for KB?
A: A Group 1 winner for Kurrinda for sure, even if I didn’t own a share. When you look after them, they are all your own on race day.
Q: Why would you recommend someone to join the Kurrinda Bloodstock community as an owner?
A: I would easily recommend someone to join as being an owner from the beginning in some early horses purchased by Sean and also being a part of the every day of the farm. I can see the evolution of the business. From the farm starting as nothing, the money that has gone back into it to produce top-class facilities, it’s no wonder the horses do so well out here. But I can also see in terms of the quality of stock, it has really increased hugely over the last couple of years with horses like Boston Rocks and Malaboom to this year’s bunch of 2 year olds. I think they could be the best group yet, it is very exciting to be a part of and I can’t wait to see the future for Kurrinda. After complications with an ongoing colic situation we have had to unfortunately put Boston Rocks to rest.
We want to thank M.J. Dale Racing and Doyle Racing and also to their staff for taking care of him every day whilst he was with you.
Thank you to the ownership group for letting us fight the fight to do our best to try and get Bosto back to his healthy best and also a thank you to the vets that also tried their best everyday.
